Mentors
At Hereward we believe that developing social emotional awareness is central to future success and achievement .
Young people who are self-aware both physically and emotionally will:
- Achieve academically
- Have good social networks
- Understand and demonstrate positive behaviour
- Be mentally and physically healthy
- Be more resilient
- Be focused and motivated to work towards goals
Learners at the college have access to mentors who offer individual and group work sessions as well as support during social time within the college day. Learners discover lifelong skills through working on who they are and how to manage the feelings they experience in day to day life.
This provides a platform for developing into mature and independent young adults, able to make choices, form good relationships and manage emotional responses positively creating ideal conditions for positive mental health and well-being.
Mentors liaise closely with the learners, cross college teams, parents, other key carers and external professional services to develop robust support plans and set challenging targets for progress.
Learners build strong relationships of trust in a safe environment which allows them to take responsible risks and flourish as they move towards greater independence.
Counselling services are also provided through the department, offering learners a private confidential space to work through their feelings and problems.
