Students build confidence in construction employer workshops
Students have been building confidence this term with a series of workshops led by construction firms and a site visit to an offsite manufacturing facility.
Stepnell Construction
Six Transition to Employment learners and Level 2 Business took part in a ‘Build your Business’ employability workshop. Natasha Heritage from Stepnell Construction delivered an inspiring morning session where the students were asked to create a construction company. They had to work in a small team and design logo, brand name and a slogan.
They then had to read different CVs and decide which candidate they would interview. They then role-played an interview with college staff and presented their business to the rest of the class.
All the students really engaged with the workshop, took away some fantastic employability skills and also liked their stress ball hats! We are looking forward to rolling out more of these workshops across college in the spring. A big thank you to Natasha for her time.
EKFB
Ten pathway students also took part in employability sessions with EKFB this term. EKFB is a joint venture that brings together international, market leading expertise from four leading civil engineering and construction companies: Eiffage, Kier, Ferrovial Construction and BAM Nuttall. EKFB is currently working on the construction of HS2 - one of Europe’s latest high speed rail projects.
The students learned about the roles within the construction industry, geology of HS2 sites and the fossil finds along the route. They took part in a range of mock interviews, STEM activities and a site tour. The group really enjoyed the variety of work over the five weeks and all received a certificate. We look forward to more work with EKFB in the spring term.
Prism Offsite Manufacturing
We had a great opportunity to visit the Prism Offsite Manufacturing facility in Coventry and enjoy a tour, learn about the commercial heating systems and have a go at a work task. Our two student groups really enjoyed asking questions and doing some practical work.
We really appreciate working with our employer partners and it was so good to see our two ex-students in their job roles at PRISM.
