New Power Hockey hub launched
A new Power Hockey hub is being launched by Hereward College in partnership with the Greenbank Project, enhancing inclusive sports opportunities for young people with physical disablities.
The college will be hosting weekly Power Hockey sessions using eight Equaliser Powersports chairs provided by the Greenbank Project. These specialist chairs will enable learners to train and compete in Power Hockey, with the goal of entering at least four competitive events annually.
The project also includes staff training, equipment maintenance and promotional support from the GB Power Hockey Association.
In a further boost to the project, Coventry and District Charitable Trust has generously donated £1,200 to support adaptations for learner safety and comfort. This funding has enabled the college to install lateral supports, thigh supports, and pommels, ensuring all participants can engage safely and confidently.
A quick stop device has also been purchased, allowing coaches to instantly deadlock a chair in the event of seizures, muscle spasms—or just some seriously questionable driving!
Hereward College CEO Paul Cook MBE, who signed the agreement on behalf of the college, said: “This partnership is a game-changer for our learners. We’re thrilled to be part of a national movement to grow Power Hockey and provide meaningful, competitive opportunities for our students.”
The hub will also deliver ‘come and try’ sessions for schools and for the community, helping to raise awareness and encourage wider participation. Hereward College is committed to building a sustainable pathway for Power Hockey, engaging delivery partners and tracking participation to ensure long-term impact.
Peter Wyman, representing the Greenbank Project, said: “Hereward College has shown incredible commitment to inclusive sport. We’re excited to see the hub thrive and become a model for other institutions.”
Ellis Palmer from the GB Power Hockey Association added: “We’re excited to be bringing our fast-paced, inclusive sport to the West Midlands. We’re delighted that Hereward is our first partner in the region, having visited several times and seen the great work they do. We hope the sport can improve the confidence, communication, teamwork, and leadership skills of the learners at the college.”
The Power Hockey hub is expected to become a cornerstone of Hereward’s inclusive sports strategy, offering learners the chance to develop skills, confidence, and leadership through regular training and competition.
