Residential / respite
As a national college, Hereward offers onsite residential accommodation for young people with disabilities who want to live more independently.
Our purpose-built residential centre has been designed to accommodate students with complex physical and communication needs.
It provides a home from home environment with fully accessible ensuite bedrooms, communal spaces, a laundry service and adjustable kitchens.
The facility also includes a dedicated flat for young people with profound and multiple learning disabilities. Equipped with sensory resources and adapted to promote a total communication approach, it offers a safe and comfortable space to support sensory needs.
A comprehensive package of support for residential students includes nursing and therapies, assistive technology and our clinical team, with care staff on hand 24/7.
Our approach is student-led; we work with residents to set personal targets which meet their own needs and ambitions. As they make new friends and develop independence and life skills, they plan a varied social life with evening and weekend activities such as bowling, cinema, bars, concerts and sporting events.
Regular activities on site include art and crafts, baking, foot spas and movie nights. Learners also have access to a gym facility on our secure campus.
The application process
Prospective learners are assessed through direct application to the college or upon receipt of a consultation from the local authority. Places are funded by the local authority through an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) and the final decision on placement is made by the local authority.
