Hereward College in Coventry has partnered with Holiday Inn Kenilworth and Balfour Beatty Living Places (BBLP) who will offer year-long work placements to enable young people with disabilities to gain experience in the world of work.
As a college for young people with disabilities and additional needs, Hereward provides its learners with a varied curriculum that focuses on skills for independent living and employment.
The two companies will be offering supported internships across a range of areas within their organisations with a view to enabling young people to gain meaningful work experience and employment.
David Myskow, General Manager at Holiday Inn said:
“We’ve been working with Hereward College for many years offering work experience opportunities for the students and are delighted to take this to the next level through supported internships.
“There are a number of areas of work at Holiday Inn where we have skills gaps, and I firmly believe in tailoring roles to suit individuals – with the ultimate aim of offering permanent positions.”
Gary Hough, Senior Commercial Manager at Balfour Beatty Living Places said:
“Being able to offer supported internships really fits with our company values which has a focus on keeping things local – from our supply chain through to employees. With contracts across Coventry, Warwickshire and Solihull the young people will be able to gain a whole range of experience in areas such as finance, business and marketing to more operational and highway maintenance.”
Mark Maffey, Business Development Manager at Hereward College said:
“We are delighted to be able to work with Balfour Beatty Living Places and Holiday Inn. Statistics show that people with learning difficulties having a 7% likelihood of finding paid employment and not only does this programme go some way to increasing employment chances but also helps fill the skills gap in many industries.
“25% of our leavers went on to do a supported internship placement last year and we are now taking applications for September 2018. Any young person aged 16 to 24 with an Education, Health and Care plan can apply for a supported internship with the college and we are accepting applications until 8th January 2018.”
