What difference has coming to Hereward made

What difference has coming to Hereward made

Karen Rathbone

Karen RathboneBefore coming to Hereward College I didn’t feel I would be able to achieve what I wanted to, yet since coming to Hereward I have been able to explore what I have wanted to, and I have received the right support from staff, who have had a better understanding of my disabilities which has allowed me to excel in my chosen course, which is dance and performing arts. I feel that I used to hide behind teaching assistants at my old school and did not have as much confidence or independence as I have now, I have more time and support when needed, which allows me to feel confident enough to attempt things by myself knowing that the support is there if I need it.

Daniel Atkins

Daniel AtkinsI feel that within Hereward I have been able to achieve my courses within a more relaxed time, I haven’t had the course material piled on top of me and been told that I must complete it within a short amount of time. I have been given the right amount of time given my abilities and I have been given the right amount of support by the teachers, who are more aware of various disabilities within the college and therefore have a better understanding, which has a positive effect on my experience within the college. I have been able to be more sociable at Hereward and have had good life experiences with my peers which I will always remember.

Hereward college has enriched my life, it has given me confidence to further explore my disability and of course to further my Abilities!  Exploring both these things allows me to gain confidence in social and academic situations. I feel that mainstream school and specialist schools compliment each other. I feel that I have experienced parts of the ‘real’ world in mainstream school, which have made me a stronger person coming into hereward. I feel that because I have had these mainstreams experiences that it has made me more independent and it has made me realise what I am and can be capable of, and that I don’t always need to rely on people. Hereward helped me to become less insular with my disability, and helped me to see others for who they are rather then just the disability, which ultimately has helped me in my chosen career path, which is to become a counsellor for individuals with disabilities. I thank hereward for allowing me to pursue opportunities which may not have been as accessible to me.
